REN is an umbrella body that supports and promotes community-based environmental and sustainability activities within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England, UK. The work with residents, voluntary groups, charities, schools and social enterprises (civil society). In addition, REN has its own projects, programmes and subgroups to deliver an increase in community environmental activity and responsibility, biological diversity, sustainable thinking & practice in the borough and to foster the more prudent use of resources.
The Ham & Petersham LCZ is the largest of the Mayor of London's 10 LCZs. The zone is being jointly delivered by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and Ham United Group CIC (HUG), an award wining community group. Chas Warlow is employed by the councils sustainability team to co-ordinate aspects of this project and a director of HUG. Low Carbon Zones is a community led approach to cutting the capital’s CO2 emissions. Ten London boroughs have won support and funding from the Mayor and GLA to create local Low Carbon Zones. These will provide model examples that can later be rolled out both within and beyond London. The short-term aim of the scheme is to achieve a 20.12% reduction in carbon by 2012, and helping towards the Mayor’s target of a 60% cut in CO2 emissions by 2025. Longer-term the ambition is for London to become the world’s environmentally friendly city.
